BELGAUM: The 24/7 drinking water scheme in the city, on demonstration basis in two zones, has proved to be a bane for the residents. The scheme has not only disrupted the regular water supply in the two demo zones but also in the city. The miseries have been further aggravated with installation of pump houses at Anandnagar in Vadgoan. Many more pump houses are yet to come. The water scheme does not mention about the tariffs the residents are supposed to pay.
Earlier, people were opposed to flat rates and had not paid their water tariffs for years. "If there is a tariff hike this time, we refuse to comply with the decision," says Deepak, a Bhagyanagar resident.
With the pipe lines being fixed in the demo zones, the roads have been dug up at several places. In some areas, the pipes have started leaking and making life difficult for the people. This has already lead to doubts in the residents' mind on the quality of work and the materials used. The Karnataka Urban Water Supply and Drainage Board, who has been executing the contract as well as distributing water, refused to speak on the number of water connections and steps undertaken to resolve the water crisis. While some officials said that they were not responsible with the work concerned.Consumers are annoyed with the fact that water is not supplied through out the day and not even on the scheduled time. "Earlier we used to get water twice a week at flat rates now but, now our plight has deteriorated," says one of the residents.Sadashivnagar and surrounding areas, which also come in the north demo zone, expect to get water regularly.Given the earlier projects of KUWSDB, "We doubt if water supply will be regular as this a demonstration project," says Ranjit Chougule. The old city, which does not come in either of the demo zones, is the worst- affected, as water supply system and timetable has collapsed. Earlier, we used to approach the Belgaum City Corporation office and officials concerned if there were large-scale interruptions. "But, with the Board taking over, we are yet to know the officials concerned so that they can be dealt with for water supply," says Sanjay Walwalkar, a city resident.
